FAQ

  • What is microblading and microshading?

Microblading and microshading are two popular techniques used for eyebrow enhancement and shaping. Here's an overview of each technique:

Microblading: Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that involves creating natural-looking eyebrow hair strokes. It is typically performed using a handheld tool with a row of fine needles. The practitioner manually implants pigment into the upper layers of the skin, mimicking the appearance of individual eyebrow hairs. Microblading can help enhance thin, sparse, or uneven eyebrows and create a more defined shape. The results usually last for about 1-3 years, depending on various factors such as skin type and aftercare.

Microshading: Microshading, also known as powder or ombre brows, is another technique for eyebrow enhancement. Unlike microblading, microshading uses a stippling method to create a soft, powdered effect on the eyebrows. This is achieved by implanting tiny dots or shading the pigment into the skin using a specialized device. Microshading is suitable for individuals with oily or sensitive skin, those who prefer a more filled-in or defined look, or those who already have a good amount of natural hair. The results can last for 1-3 years, similar to microblading.

Both microblading and microshading are performed by trained professionals who consider factors such as your facial structure, skin tone, and desired outcome to create customized eyebrows.

  • How are microshading and microblading different from each other?

Microshading and microblading are two different techniques used for eyebrow enhancement. Here are the key differences between the two:

    1. Technique: Microblading involves using a handheld tool with fine needles to create individual hair-like strokes in the eyebrows. The strokes are manually implanted into the skin to mimic the appearance of natural eyebrow hairs. On the other hand, microshading uses a stippling or shading technique to create a soft, powdered effect. Tiny dots or small lines of pigment are implanted into the skin, resulting in a denser, more filled-in appearance.

    2. Resulting Look: Microblading is known for creating a more defined, crisp, and hair-like effect. It can mimic the appearance of natural eyebrow hairs, providing a realistic and natural look. Microshading, on the other hand, creates a soft, powdered effect. It gives the eyebrows a fuller and more filled-in look, similar to wearing brow makeup or having a soft eyebrow pencil applied.

    3. Skin Type Suitability: Microblading is generally suitable for various skin types, including normal to dry skin. It can benefit individuals with thin, sparse, or uneven eyebrows. Microshading, however, is often preferred for individuals with oily or sensitive skin, as it tends to hold up better on such skin types.

  • How long does semi-permanent make-up last?

The longevity of semi-permanent makeup can vary depending on several factors, including the type of procedure, individual factors, and aftercare. Here are approximate durations for commonly performed semi-permanent makeup procedures:

Eyebrows (Microblading or Microshading): The results of microblading or microshading typically last between 1 to 3 years. Touch-up sessions are often recommended every 12-18 months to maintain the desired look.

It's important to note that semi-permanent makeup is designed to gradually fade over time. The pigments used in the procedure are specifically chosen to mimic the natural tones of the face, and they will fade and soften as the skin naturally exfoliates and renews itself.

To maintain the desired results, touch-up or maintenance sessions are typically recommended. These sessions allow the practitioner to refresh and refine the pigment, ensuring that the color and shape remain consistent and enhance your features.

  • Is the procedure painful?

The level of discomfort experienced during a semi-permanent brow procedure can vary from person to person. However, most individuals report mild to moderate discomfort during the process. The discomfort is typically manageable and temporary. At Plump-Ink Studio we ensure our clients feel comfortable throughout their whole appointment. We use a special numbing technique to ensure a less painful procedure for our clients.

Before the procedure begins, a topical numbing cream or gel is usually applied to the brow area to help minimize any potential discomfort. This numbing agent helps to alleviate the sensation during the procedure.

During the procedure itself, you may feel a scratching or slight scraping sensation as the microblading or microshading tool is used to create the desired brow shape and pigment is implanted into the skin. The level of discomfort can also depend on individual pain tolerance, as well as the specific technique and practitioner's skill.

It's important to communicate openly with your practitioner about any discomfort or sensitivity you may experience during the procedure. They can adjust their technique or provide additional numbing if necessary to ensure your comfort.

After the procedure, some individuals may experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated area. These symptoms are typically temporary and subside within a few days.

Overall, while there may be some discomfort during a semi-permanent brow procedure, many individuals find it tolerable and well worth the results achieved

  • How long does the procedure take?

The duration of a semi-permanent brow procedure can vary depending on several factors, including the technique used, the complexity of the desired brow shape, and the individual practitioner's process. However, as a general guideline at Plump-Ink Studio:

    1. Consultation: The initial consultation is an important part of the process where you discuss your desired brow shape, color, and overall expectations. This can typically take around 15 to 30 minutes, but it may vary based on your specific needs and questions.

    2. Preparing the Brow Area: Before the procedure begins, the brow area is cleansed and prepared. This can involve removing any makeup or residue and applying a topical numbing cream. Preparing the brow area usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

    3. Mapping and Designing: Our practitioner will carefully measure and map out the desired shape and symmetry of your brows. This process ensures that the final result is tailored to your facial features and preferences. Mapping and designing the brows can take approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

    4. Procedure: The actual semi-permanent brow procedure typically takes around 1 to 2 hours. This includes the microblading or microshading process, where the pigment is carefully implanted into the skin to create the desired shape and appearance. The time may vary depending on the intricacy of the technique, the extent of the desired brow enhancement, and our practitioner's speed and precision.

    5. Aftercare Instructions: After the procedure, our practitioner will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. This includes information on how to care for your brows during the healing process and what activities to avoid. The aftercare instructions may be explained in around 10 to 15 minutes.

It's important to note that these timeframes are approximate and can vary between practitioners and individual circumstances. It's recommended to allocate sufficient time for the procedure and to schedule your appointment accordingly

  • How should I prep for a microblading or microshading appointment?

To ensure a successful semi-permanent brow appointment, it's important to follow these preparation steps:

    1. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications: Prior to your appointment, it's advisable to avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or vitamin E, as they can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising during the procedure. Consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen.

    2. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: It's recommended to avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine intake at least 24 hours before your appointment. These substances can potentially increase sensitivity and contribute to bleeding during the procedure.

    3. Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning: It's best to avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning before your appointment. Sunburned or excessively tanned skin can be more sensitive during the procedure and may affect the color outcome.

    4. Avoid Facial Treatments: Refrain from facial treatments, chemical peels, or laser procedures in the brow area for at least two weeks before your appointment. These treatments can make the skin more sensitive and affect the healing process.

    5. Cleanse the Brow Area: On the day of your appointment, make sure the brow area is clean and free of makeup, oils, or lotions. Cleanse the area thoroughly before you arrive, following any specific instructions provided by the practitioner. Be sure to arrive with fresh clean brows!

    6. Plan Your Schedule: Allow enough time for the appointment, considering the consultation, mapping, the procedure itself, and potential aftercare instructions. It's also a good idea to avoid scheduling any strenuous activities immediately after the procedure, as your brows may be sensitive during the initial healing phase.

    7. Communicate Your Expectations: During the consultation, be clear about your desired brow shape, color, and overall expectations. Bring reference photos if necessary to help convey your preferences to the practitioner.

Following these preparation steps can help ensure a smooth and successful semi-permanent brow appointment. However, it's important to consult with your practitioner for any specific instructions they may have based on your individual circumstances.

  • What factors should I consider before deciding on a brow treatment?

When deciding on a brow treatment, there are several factors to consider. Here are some important ones to keep in mind:

    1. Desired Outcome: Consider what you want to achieve with your brows. Are you looking to enhance their shape, fill in sparse areas, or create a more defined look? Different brow treatments offer varying results, so understanding your desired outcome is crucial.

    2. Technique: There are different techniques available for brow treatments, such as microblading, microshading, or a combination of both. Check our FAQ above to learn more about each technique to understand their differences, including the appearance they create, the longevity of results, and how they align with your preferences. If you still have questions feel free to book a free consult.

    3. Skin Type and Sensitivities: Your skin type can influence the choice of treatment and affect the longevity of the results. Certain techniques may be better suited for oily or sensitive skin, while others may work well on dry or normal skin. Discuss your skin type and any sensitivities with our practitioner to determine the most suitable treatment option.

    4. Maintenance and Longevity: Understand the maintenance requirements and expected longevity of the treatment. Some treatments may require touch-ups or color refreshments over time to maintain the desired appearance. Consider your willingness and ability to commit to follow-up appointments and aftercare instructions.

    5. Budget: Different brow treatments have varying costs, so it's important to consider your budget. Keep in mind that quality, expertise, and the outcome are important factors, so prioritize finding a practitioner you align with rather than solely focusing on the cost. Once you get your brows done you shouldn’t have to come back for frequent touch-ups, a brow procedure is a time saver!

    6. Lifestyle and Activities: Consider your lifestyle and daily activities when choosing a brow treatment. If you have an active lifestyle or engage in activities that may affect the brows (such as swimming or excessive sweating), discuss this with the practitioner to ensure the treatment can withstand your routine.

    7. Consultation and Communication: Schedule a consultation with our practitioner to discuss your goals, concerns, and expectations. A consultation allows you to ask questions, assess the practitioner's expertise, and ensure you both have a clear understanding of the desired outcome.

By considering these factors and having open communication with our practitioner, you can make an informed decision about the most suitable brow treatment for you. Remember, everyone's preferences and needs are unique, so it's essential to find a treatment that aligns with your desired aesthetic and lifestyle.

  • How long is the healing process after the treatment?

Healing normally occurs over a 14-day period. In the first days the eyebrows will look much darker because the body is rejecting the pigment and it will take approximately 10-12 days to fully heal. It is important not to pick or irritate the scabs as this can cause scarring and loss of pigment. Once the scabbing has stopped it will look as if there was a loss in pigment. This is completely normal since after 10 days our skin forms a protective barrier which makes the pigment look lighter and blurry, this is normal. The pigment takes approximately 4 weeks to appear again. If you have any questions regarding healing or aftercare, visit our aftercare page.

  • Can I choose the shape and color of my brows?

Yes, you can definitely choose the shape and color of your brows during your semi-permanent brow appointment. Our practitioner will work closely with you to understand your preferences and guide you through the process of selecting the most suitable shape and color.

Here's how the consultation and customization process typically works:

    1. Consultation: During the initial consultation, you will have an opportunity to discuss your desired brow shape, color, and overall expectations. You can bring reference photos or examples of brows you admire to help convey your preferences. Our practitioner will assess your facial features, existing brow shape, and consider factors such as your face shape, skin tone, and hair color to provide recommendations and guidance.

    2. Mapping and Design: Once your preferences are understood, our practitioner will carefully measure and map out the desired shape and symmetry of your brows. They will take into account your natural brow structure, facial proportions, and the desired outcome to create a customized design that enhances your features. This step ensures that the final result complements your face and achieves your desired aesthetic.

    3. Color Selection: Our practitioner will work with you to select the most appropriate color for your semi-permanent brows. They will consider your hair color, skin undertones, and personal preferences to choose a pigment shade that matches or enhances your natural brows. They may also create custom blends of pigments to achieve the desired color result.

Throughout the process, our practitioner will provide their expertise and professional advice to help you make informed decisions. They will guide you based on their knowledge of brow aesthetics, facial harmony, and the technical aspects of the chosen technique (such as microblading or microshading).

Remember that communication is key during the consultation and customization process. Be open about your preferences, ask questions, and provide feedback to ensure that you and the practitioner are aligned on the desired shape and color of your brows. Working together, you can achieve a result that suits your individual style and enhances your facial features.

  • How often do I need touch-up appointments?

You will have an initial touch-up 4-6 weeks after your first session. Brows are meant to last 2-3 years based on the pigment infused into the skin. Depending on the technique and the individual's healing process, a touch-up session may be required after a few weeks or months to perfect the results. After your initial touch-up you may come in every 12-18 months to review the clarity and color, or you have the option to wait until 2-3 years. Each clients healing process is different and desires different results.

  • Is there any downtime or restrictions after the treatment?

After a semi-permanent brow treatment, there are typically some aftercare guidelines to follow, but the downtime is minimal. Here are some common recommendations:

    1. Avoid Touching or Wetting the Brows: It's important to keep the treated area dry and avoid touching it for the first few days after the procedure. This allows the pigment to settle and adhere properly to the skin.

    2. Apply Aftercare Products: Our practitioner will provide you with a specialized aftercare ointment or cream to apply to the treated area. Follow their instructions on how and when to apply these products.

    3. Avoid Sun Exposure: Direct sun exposure should be avoided during the initial healing phase, as it can fade the pigment and increase the risk of complications. If you need to be outside, protect your brows with a hat or sunglasses and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen after the initial healing phase.

    4. Avoid Excessive Sweating and Exercise: Avoid intense physical activities or excessive sweating for the first week or so after the treatment. Sweating can disrupt the healing process and affect the retention of the pigment.

    5. Avoid Makeup and Beauty Treatments: Refrain from applying makeup, including brow makeup, directly on the treated area until it has fully healed. Avoid other beauty treatments in the brow area, such as facials, chemical peels, or laser treatments, during the initial healing phase.

    6. Be Mindful of Sleeping Positions: During the initial healing phase, it's best to avoid sleeping on your face or rubbing the brow area against the pillow. This can prevent any unnecessary irritation or rubbing of the treated area.

    7. Follow Up for Touch-up Sessions: Depending on the technique and the individual's healing process, a touch-up session may be required after a few weeks or months to perfect the results. Follow our practitioner's recommendations and schedule any necessary touch-up appointments.

It's important to note that everyone's healing process may vary, and the specific aftercare instructions may differ slightly depending on the practitioner and technique used. Always follow the aftercare guidelines provided by your practitioner to ensure the best results and minimize any potential risks or complications.

In terms of downtime, you can typically resume your regular activities immediately after the procedure, but it's normal to experience some mild redness, tenderness, or slight swelling in the treated area. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. Most individuals are able to return to work and daily routines without significant interruption.

If you have any concerns or questions about the aftercare or restrictions, it's best to consult with our practitioner. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation and ensure a smooth healing process.

  • Can I still wear make-up on my brows after the procedure?

During the initial healing phase of your semi-permanent brow procedure, it is generally recommended to avoid applying makeup directly on the treated area. This allows the brows to heal properly and ensures the pigment settles in the skin effectively.

The specific duration of the healing phase can vary, but it typically lasts around 7 to 14 days. During this time, it's best to refrain from using makeup, including brow makeup, in the treated area. Applying makeup on the healing brows can introduce bacteria and potentially disrupt the healing process or affect the retention of the pigment.

However, you can still wear makeup on other areas of your face as long as you are cautious and avoid contact with the healing brows. If you normally fill in your brows with makeup, you may need to adjust your makeup routine during the healing phase. You can consult with your practitioner for specific guidelines and recommendations based on your individual situation.

Once the healing phase is complete and your practitioner gives you the go-ahead, you can resume applying makeup to your brows. At that point, you may find that you need less brow makeup, as the semi-permanent brow treatment will already provide shape, definition, and color to your brows.

  • How much do microblading and microshading procedures cost?

At Plump-Ink Studios our Brow services can range from $350-$400 for an initial session. There is a $50 deposit due upon booking to secure your appointment.

  • Are the results of microblading and microshading natural looking?

Yes, the results of a well-executed semi-permanent brow procedure can appear natural-looking. Our skilled practitioners strive to create brows that enhance your facial features and mimic the appearance of natural eyebrows.

Through careful selection of pigment color, precise application techniques, and attention to individual brow shape and symmetry, the goal is to achieve results that blend seamlessly with your existing brow hair (if applicable) and complement your overall facial aesthetics.

The technique used, such as microblading or microshading, can contribute to natural-looking results. Microblading involves creating hair-like strokes to simulate the look of natural brow hairs, while microshading involves adding soft, powdered effects to create a fuller and more defined appearance. A combination of both techniques, known as hybrid brows, can also be used to achieve a natural yet enhanced look.

To ensure natural-looking results, it's crucial to communicate your desired outcome and expectations clearly with your practitioner during the consultation. They will consider factors such as your face shape, skin tone, and existing brow hair to create a customized treatment plan.

Remember that immediately after the procedure, the brows may appear darker and more defined than the final result. However, as the healing process progresses, the color will soften and settle, resulting in a more natural-looking appearance.
